MapInfo
MapXtreme is a server-based development platform for enterprise
level internet mapping applications. These applications
are designed to distribute map images and related information,
through a web browser, to a great number of concurrent users.
One
typical example is ¡°Branch / ATM Locator¡± inside a bank¡¯s
web page. Customer simply enters the address or chooses
from a list of districts where banking service is needed,
the MapXtreme server would return a map image showing the
branches and ATMs available near that particular spot. The
query session is interactive meaning that the customer could
further zoom-in, zoom-out and pan around the initial map
image. Corresponding information like branch/ATM address,
public transport information, driving directions are also
dispatched with the map images.
The
chief advantage of internet mapping application is in its
economy-of-scale. Web Browser like Internet Explorer is
used as the medium to distribute maps and related information
to the user. That means the application would not give rise
to any extra cost to the user and is therefore the most
cost-effective way to distribute location-based information
to a huge and scattered user group.
